With the start of the new school year, Italian schools in South Tyrol are called upon to reflect on a topic of great importance: reducing the use of plastic. This commitment not only responds to growing environmental concerns, but also represents an educational opportunity to make students aware of the ecological challenges of our time.

In this context, schools, as educational institutions, have a responsibility to drive change. Reducing plastic use in schools can contribute significantly to the overall reduction of plastic pollution, while promoting sustainable lifestyles among students.

What are the concrete actions for a plastic-free school year? To reduce the use of plastic at school, several strategies can be adopted:

  • Eliminate single-use plastic: One of the most effective measures is to ban the use of single-use plastic items such as bottles, cups, cutlery, etc. Students and school staff can be encouraged to bring reusable water bottles and snack containers from home.

  • Promote the use of alternative materials: instead of plastic, schools can adopt more sustainable materials such as wood, glass or stainless steel. Recycled paper can also be used to replace some plastic products, such as folders and covers for notebooks or books.

  • Educate on waste separation: It is essential that schools promote proper waste separation. Installing special containers for collecting plastic, paper, glass and organic waste in all classrooms and common areas can help reduce waste and teach students the importance of recycling.

  • Projects and workshops on ecology: To make students more aware, schools can organise specific workshops, projects and lessons on ecology and the importance of reducing the use of plastic. Involving children in hands-on activities, such as cleaning courtyards, playgrounds or creating artwork with recycled materials, can stimulate their creativity and environmental awareness.

  • Collaboration with families: It is essential to also involve families in this process. Sending communications and suggestions on how to reduce plastic use at home and promote a sustainable lifestyle can reinforce the educational message given at school.

Reducing plastic use at school is not only an ecological choice, but an investment in the future. Educating new generations to live more sustainably is essential to meet the environmental challenges that lie ahead. With the combined efforts of students, teachers, families and institutions, the new school year can mark a significant step towards a cleaner, healthier world.
